HTH students in Legos & Robotics (grades 7-12) designed, built, and testing robots for competition. A big part of this whole process is teamwork and problem solving. "Gracious Professionalism" is top priority, including working with business partners, and other schools in the area to share knowledge and help each other out.

Here's a video we prepared showing the work with our superintendent, Carol Comeau, some Alaska State Legislatures, parents, business partners, and the other two Anchorage Robotics Teams from Dimond and Bartlett (before we went off to competition).

Robotics & Legos "Wow" the Judges!

On, March 14, 2008, the Highland Tech High (HTH) Team 1548 students received the Judges’ Award at the Silicon Valley Robotics Competition in San Jose, California. This award is only given to one team attending the competition, based on a team’s unique efforts, performance, dynamics, merit recognition, and “gracious professionalism”. With one more day of competition to go, HTH students are using evenings to strategize on ways to improve their performance with the robot, as a team, to help others, and work together. This year’s theme, “First Overdrive” is for high school students, grades 9-12.

The HTH Legos/Robotics Team 5947 will be representing the State of Alaska at the FIRST LEGO League World Festival Competition in Atlanta, Georgia from 16-19 April 2008. This competition involves teams from about 25 different countries as well as other top teams from across the United States.

The competition involves judging in four areas including building a robot to compete in performance matches, an evaluation of the design and programming for our robot, an evaluation of our ability to work as a team, and a project that focuses on the theme of this year’s competition. This year’s theme for the Legos/Robotics (grades 7&8) is POWER PUZZLE which examines alternative sources of energy and their application in local communities.

HTH’s team completed their project for the state competition, and is now in the process of helping communities around Alaska save money on energy. Providing face-to-face presentations and audit instructions, HTH Legos/Robotics students are helping schools around Anchorage conduct energy audits, as well as helping others statewide through video and audio conferences. A report will be given to the Alaska State Legislature by April 1, 2008 on the findings.

Robotics Regional Competition - Las Vegas, NV

Our HTH Team 1548 attended the regional competition this week. As a whole, we rated 24 out of 54 teams attending. Our robot did well for defense, but we were challenged in getting it to operate correctly, especially since we did not get a chance to practice before loading and shipping the robot off. The tension was high, and members were frustrated, but rather than play the "blame game", everyone pulled together and problem solved. As Rachel stated, no matter what our ranking, we are champions!

Summer in Elfin Cove

This summer has been a great break, with a long visit to Bob and Louise Mourant (my parents) in Elfin Cove, Alaska. The area around Icy Straits is beautiful, looking over the Fair Weather Mountain Range that surrounds Glacier Bay National Park. Local residents and many visitors enjoyed the celebrations for the 4th of July, including a parade of locals and fishing lodges, games for the kids and adults in the community building, a picnic at the volleyball court, and a grease pole competition at the end of the airplane float. Dad and I reconstructed the front porch and stairs going up to the house. We played lots of cards and watched movies, whenever we didn't have visitors and things happening around the Cove. I continue to work on my master's degree in Education, and get on-line daily, thanks to the wireless internet now available in Elfin.

Over vacation, Chuck and I visited Anah and Shital in Issaquah, Washington for Christmas, then to Reno for New Year's. It was a fun, relaxing time. Next year we hope to host everyone in Anchorage, including Yeung, who was unable to join us this year.

We were met with a warm welcome by students and staff. This private school, grades 9&10 hosts approximately 50 children from the surrounding Polynesian islands. They are all eager to learn, beginning their day at 4:00 am, and finishing by 8:30 pm. The school day formally begins at 8:30 am and ends at 4:40 pm, but students living in the dorms continue their leadership, ethics, and teamwork throughout the day.
